
Most people know to clean the lint trap after every dryer cycle. This habit is widely followed, but it isn’t enough to prevent a fire.
If towels now take two cycles to dry, the laundry room feels unusually hot, or the machine’s exterior stays warm after a load, those are early warnings. The issue isn’t the lint screen just emptied—it’s what’s hidden behind it.
The numbers behind the risk
U.S. fire departments respond to roughly 2,900 home clothes dryer fires annually. These incidents result in five deaths, 100 injuries, and $35 million in property damage. The leading cause in about a third of cases is failure to clean the dryer, not mechanical or electrical problems.
The National Fire Protection Association notes that dust, fiber, or lint ignites first in most of these fires. This happens even in homes where the lint screen is cleaned regularly.
What the lint screen actually does—and what it doesn’t
The lint screen catches visible fluff without blocking airflow. If the mesh were fine enough to trap every particle, clothes wouldn’t dry. By design, some lint slips through.
Maytag explains in its guidance that lint traps act as a barrier between the drum and ductwork, but particles still escape and restrict airflow over time. The company states the screen misses material intentionally, every load.
That fine lint doesn’t vanish. It gets pushed into the exhaust duct behind the dryer, a flexible or semi-rigid pipe running through the wall to an exterior vent. Over time, lint builds up inside like frost on a coil. It remains unseen but accumulates steadily.

This buildup explains why dryers suddenly need two cycles. The U.S. Department of Energy warns that checking the vent for blockages saves energy and may prevent fires. Manufacturer testing shows restricted airflow can reduce efficiency by over 30%, increasing utility costs. The NFPA states that if clothes take longer to dry, the vent pipe—not the machine—needs attention.
Slow drying is the first sign. A hot laundry room follows. A faint burnt or dusty smell during a cycle is the last warning to act on.
Why a single heat cycle can be dangerous
A residential dryer typically runs at 125°F to 135°F internally. Lint ignites at 400°F to 450°F. As long as air moves freely, heat escapes outside, keeping temperatures below ignition levels. The safety margin depends entirely on airflow.
When lint coats the vent duct, airflow drops. The heating element runs longer to compensate, raising internal temperatures.
The scenario describes a system designed to run cool but forced to run hot, load after load, until the margin disappears.
Most assume the lint screen is the only defense. The real risk lies in the duct that can’t be seen—and the buildup that goes unnoticed until it’s too late.
How to clean the vent yourself
A rotary dryer vent brush kit costs about $20 to $30 at hardware stores. The NFPA recommends using one annually, or sooner if drying times increase. The process takes roughly 20 minutes.

First, cut the power. Unplug the dryer. For gas models, shut off the supply valve behind the machine. If unsure how, contact the gas utility or a licensed plumber.
Pull the dryer out for clearance. Lay down an old towel to catch dust. Disconnect the exhaust duct, the flexible or semi-rigid pipe secured with a clamp or foil tape. Loosen it and remove it from the machine and wall port.
Assemble the brush kit. Attach the head to the first rod, then connect the other end to a cordless drill’s chuck. Run the drill clockwise on low speed. Push the brush gently into the wall duct with a slow in-and-out motion, adding rods as needed to reach the exterior vent. Clockwise rotation matters—rod sections screw together, and reversing the drill can unscrew them, leaving a section stuck in the wall.
Vacuum while working. Lint will fall from the duct opening. A shop vac or regular vacuum with a hose contains the mess. Next, clean the exterior vent hood. Remove lint, leaves, or nests, and ensure the flap opens and closes freely.
Reconnect the duct with metal foil tape or a proper clamp. Never use regular duct tape, as it dries out and fails. Push the dryer back, plug it in, and restore gas flow if applicable. Run a short empty cycle to confirm the exterior vent flap opens fully.
Two situations may require professional help. If the dryer vents through the roof or the duct exceeds 25 feet with multiple turns, a standard brush kit may not reach. Certified technicians charge $150 to $300 for thorough cleaning. Also, replace white plastic or thin foil accordion tubing with rigid or semi-rigid metal. The U.S. Fire Administration and manufacturers warn against plastic and foil ducts because they burn easily, sag, and trap lint.
Cleaning the lint screen after every load remains important. The real difference between a safe dryer and one dangerously close to disaster is a small brush kit and 20 minutes once a year.
