Decorator and artist Gavin Houghton is showcasing his work at Sibyl Colefax & John Fowler this month. The exhibition, titled “Gavin Houghton”, runs from November 3–19 at the firm’s Pimlico Road showroom in London.
Houghton’s artistic roots run deep. “I’ve painted for as long as I can remember,” he says, citing his parents’ artistic backgrounds. His father attended the Slade School of Fine Art, while his mother became a painter.
The exhibition came about after Emma Burns, managing director at Sibyl Colefax & John Fowler, discovered Houghton’s work at his Tangier studio. Burns was drawn to Houghton’s still lifes, which often feature the decorating firm’s patterned fabrics in the background.

Houghton began his career with a work experience placement at The World of Interiors. Founding editor Min Hogg recognized his talent, hiring him as a full-time editorial stylist. His paintings and ceramics feel like a natural progression from his work in interior design, reflecting his love for decorative patterns and color combinations.
Houghton’s creations stand out for their playfulness and lively use of color and texture. “I’ve fallen deeply in love with the process,” he shares, describing the excitement of crafting each piece. He plans to explore roomscapes in future projects, continuing to expand his artistic horizons.
