Anacapa Architecture’s design for Hope Ranch Estate has been named a finalist in the 8th annual GRAY Awards, competing in the On the Boards category. The project reimagines residential architecture as an inward-focused retreat rather than a showcase for sweeping views.
The estate sits on a quiet knoll, where the design prioritizes a dwelling that cherishes the essence of an internal sanctuary. At its core, a central courtyard serves as the home’s emotional anchor—a space where residents can disconnect amid spa-like amenities and lush vegetation. The layout blurs the boundaries between exterior and interior, pulling natural light and greenery deep into the living areas.
A home built for solitude—and celebration
The property’s front and rear halves serve distinct purposes. The primary residence wraps around the courtyard, offering private spaces for relaxation. Below, a landscaped guest entry welcomes visitors through a garden bathed in sunlight, where the boundary between architecture and nature feels intentionally soft.

In contrast, the estate’s rear shifts toward entertainment. Guest quarters and an equestrian stable frame a social hub, with panoramic views of the Santa Barbara mountains as a backdrop. The design balances intimacy with scale, ensuring the home can host gatherings without losing its sense of seclusion.
The estate doesn’t just occupy its site; it shapes an experience, turning every corner into a deliberate moment of connection or calm.
Design rooted in sustainability and emotion
The project was led by Dan Weber, principal architect, with Tony Schonhardt as director of design and Asher Caplan contributing as designer. Places Studio created the renderings.

Their goal is to create spaces that evoke emotion and improve quality of life for clients and the broader community.
The GRAY Awards, in their eighth year, recognize innovation in architecture and design across the Pacific Northwest and beyond. Winners will be announced later this year.
