
You wipe down your kitchen cabinets on Saturday. By Wednesday, they feel tacky again. A stronger degreaser doesn’t help. Neither does scrubbing for an hour on a step stool. Two weeks later, the same yellow film returns above the stove.
The problem isn’t the paint, the cabinets, or the weather. It also isn’t how hard you scrub. The real issue begins before you notice anything wrong.
Why cabinets stay sticky
That yellow film isn’t dust. It’s cooking oil. Run a finger along the bottom edge of a cabinet above your stove. If it feels tacky or leaves a brown smudge, you’re touching a thin layer of aerosolized grease—tiny droplets that floated up from your pan and settled on the surface. Dust later sticks to it.
The Environmental Protection Agency recommends turning on the range hood every time you cook, not just when something smokes. The agency also advises leaving it running for 10 to 20 minutes after you finish.
A patent for degreaser products explains why cooking oil turns into a mist that drifts through the air and lands on kitchen surfaces. Once there, it dries into a thick, jelly-like layer that clings stubbornly. All-purpose cleaners can’t break it down.
Heat worsens the problem. Walls near a gas stove can reach 90 to 100°F (32 to 38°C) during heavy cooking. That warmth softens kitchen paint slightly, making it stickier. The softened paint grabs floating oil faster than cool surfaces do, speeding up buildup.

This happens even when you don’t see smoke. Indoor-air scientists say the habit of only using the fan when something smokes quietly damages kitchens. Brett Singer, a senior scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, has said people skip the fan because they assume it’s only needed for smoke, strong smells, or steam. But most of what comes off a hot pan is invisible and odorless.
A study in the Journal of the Air & Waste Management Association tested seven common cooking oils at typical temperatures. Even at 131 to 197°C (268 to 387°F)—well below their smoke points—the pans released many tiny oil particles. These are the same particles that end up on your cabinets.
By the time you see haze above the stove, the oil mist has already been landing on surfaces for minutes. Turning on the fan then is too late.

The fix costs nothing and takes less than a second.
The simple solution
Turn your range hood on the moment you turn the burner on. Every time. Even for a fried egg.
Don’t wait until the pan gets hot, the oil smokes, or you notice a smell. Flip the fan switch as part of turning on the stove. One motion: burner on, fan on. Low or medium speed works for most cooking.

Cook on the back burners when possible. The EPA notes that mist from a back burner rises straight into the fan. From a front burner, half of it drifts past the fan and onto your cabinets.
Leave the fan running for 10 to 20 minutes after you finish cooking. The oil mist doesn’t stop rising the second you turn off the flame.
If your range hood recirculates air instead of venting outside, it still helps—but not as effectively. Guidance from the Salt Lake City Green Blog says hoods that vent outside work better. If yours recirculates, keep the filter clean and crack a window when possible.
Clean the grease filter every one to three months. A clogged filter can’t pull air through. Metal mesh filters can go in the dishwasher on the top rack. Charcoal filters usually need replacing.
Use a lid or splatter screen when frying, if the recipe allows. Less oil in the air means less landing on surfaces.
The habit change is small but easy to overlook. Those cabinet-scrubbing sessions are the result of a one-second choice you didn’t make earlier. Flip the switch when the burner goes on. The difference will be clear.
