This setup is frustrating for investigators because the cause is often hiding in plain sight. The dangerous arrangement is usually still sitting in millions of homes, doing exactly what it was doing before the fire started. The homeowner often thought it was a safe, permanent solution.
The statistics paint a clear picture. About 51,000 home fires annually are traced to electrical failures, resulting in roughly 500 deaths and $1.3 billion in property damage, according to the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI). While bad wiring inside walls contributes to this number, a significant portion comes from ordinary, visible power setups.
One specific habit appears in fire reports roughly 3,300 times per year. It kills about 50 people and injures 270 others annually. The hazard is a cord tucked under a rug. It looks tidy. It eliminates tripping hazards. But it turns a common household item into a hidden ignition source.

The Mechanics of a Hidden Fire
Fire safety experts agree that three factors combine to create danger under a carpet. The first is heat generation. Every cord warms slightly when electricity flows through it. In open air, this heat dissipates harmlessly. Under a rug, the fabric acts as insulation, trapping the warmth.
The second factor involves the temperature rating of the cord’s plastic insulation. Most household cords are rated to remain safe only up to about 140°F (60°C). Once trapped heat pushes the cord past this limit, the plastic begins to degrade. It does not melt visibly; it simply loses its ability to protect the internal wires.
The third issue is physical damage. Walking across a rug presses down on the cord. Inside the casing are dozens of fine copper strands. Foot traffic bends and crushes these strands repeatedly. Eventually, some of them snap. The remaining strands must carry the same electrical load, generating more heat at the exact point where the insulation is weakest.
Homeowners naturally prioritize the immediate aesthetic benefit of a clean floor over the invisible, statistical probability of a fire. It is a silent calculation made in millions of living rooms, where the danger feels theoretical until the moment it isn’t. The risk accumulates slowly, while the satisfaction of a hidden wire is instant.
What the Safety Codes Say
This risk is not just anecdotal; it is codified in the regulations electricians follow. The code forbids running them through walls, floors, or ceilings, and it bans covering them.

Addressing the problem requires minimal effort. The immediate step is to lift the rug and remove the cord. Homeowners should run a hand along the cord to check for warmth, stiffness, or a burning smell. If a cord shows these signs, it should be discarded immediately.
Appliances that draw high power, such as space heaters or air conditioners, should never be plugged into an extension cord. For a tidier appearance, homeowners can install plastic raceways or cord covers along the baseboard. These cost between $10 and $20 and allow air to circulate around the wire. Stapling cords to the wall is not recommended, as this can damage the insulation.
If a cord has been in place for months, the issue is not the cord itself but a lack of outlets. The permanent solution is hiring a licensed electrician to install a new receptacle where power is actually needed.
