Pet friendly shelter helps homeless people

For people experiencing homelessness, the decision to seek shelter can be difficult, especially when it means leaving behind a beloved pet. However, Father Joe’s Villages has been running a pet-friendly shelter for years, providing a safe space for both people and their animals.

A significant number of adults experiencing homelessness, estimated to be around 12 percent, have a pet. These companion animals provide more than just companionship; they also offer a sense of safety and comfort during a vulnerable time. In fact, people experiencing homelessness who have a pet with them are less likely to experience depression, loneliness, or substance use issues.
