The GDT04 impact driver achieves 2,040 inch-pounds torque, outperforming competitors in consistent power delivery.

Makita’s newest XGT202SU1D1 drill/driver combo kit builds on its 40-volt platform by emphasizing refined motor control rather than simply increasing raw output. The GPH03 hammer drill and the GDT04 impact driver each deliver impressive torque, the drill reaches 1,590 inch-pounds while the driver pushes 2,040 inch-pounds, but their true strength lies in how consistently they perform when the load increases. A redesigned controller smooths power delivery, which translates into more predictable handling for everyday carpentry work and reduces the chance of sudden stalls.

The GPH03 replaces the older GPH01 model and introduces a gentler start-up sequence, a feature that proves useful when driving large augers or self-feed bits into tough material. It also holds its rotation speed longer under stress and bounces back more quickly after the bit meets knots or dense wood fibers. Improved heat management means the unit remains cooler during prolonged boring sessions, helping to prevent the power dips that can interrupt a job. The compromise for these benefits is a reduction in top speed, as the new version runs about 200 RPM slower than its predecessor even when set to the lowest gear.

Meanwhile, the GDT04 impact driver is roughly a half-inch longer than the earlier version, moving the collet farther from the battery pack and lessening the likelihood of the bit being obstructed in tight spaces. Its output of 4,400 RPM combined with updated assist modes makes the initial bite on screws smoother, while the enhanced controller keeps the tool’s temperature down during repetitive driving. This combination is especially valuable for tasks involving structural fasteners, decking boards, or metal roofing panels, where the tendency of bits to cam out can slow progress and wear out equipment.

Overall, these updates indicate that Makita has tuned the XGT series to meet practical field requirements. The tools feel smoother in the hand, demonstrate greater reliability, and are better suited to heavy-duty applications than earlier releases. The trade-off comes in the form of added bulk; both units are a bit larger and heavier than the models they replace. For carpenters who regularly tackle large fasteners or deep-hole drilling, the extra torque and control justify the change. Users whose projects involve lighter tasks may find the additional power unnecessary.

The combo kit ships with two rechargeable packs and a charger, and the total price is $500. If the drill and driver are bought separately, the GPH03 is priced at $260 and the GDT04 at $230. Owners of existing XGT platform tools who seek more torque will likely consider the enhancements worth the investment.
